Dear Gabby Douglas,
Thank you for specifically being the highlight of the my Olympic experience. This is not to discredit Michael Phelps (the most decorated Olympian of all time), Katie Ledecky (the female Phelps), Simone Biles (arguably the greatest gymnast ever since…you), Aly Raisman (the team captain), USA basketball, USA track and field and others. I mean, I could go on and on about all of the fantastic athletes and stellar moments of these 2016 Olympic games, but I want to shine my proverbial flashlight on why YOU made this Olympics special to me.
Buried in the complete and utter dominance of the “Final Five” women’s gymnastics team from the good ol US of A, and the coronation of the new greatest gymnast (irregardless of gender) Simone Biles, stood one of the most humblest and mature athletes I think I’ve ever seen (yes, you Gabby). Allow me to regurgitate your 2012 Olympic resume for the general public who must have forgotten. Eh em…In London 2012, a younger, shorter Gabrielle Douglas “finally” rose to global recognition when she became the first African American woman in Olympic history to become the individual all-around champion, AAAAND the first American gymnast to win gold in both the individual all-around and team competitions AT. THE. SAME. OLYMPICS. She also became the only American all-around champion to win MULTIPLE gold medals in a single Olympic Games, AAAAND the first female reigning Olympic all-around champion to return to the World Championships and medal in the all-around since Elena Davydova in 1981.
Let me take a breather while people read and re-read what I just wrote. *long pause*

See, I had to say “‘finally’ rose to global recognition” because most of us aren’t privy to watching gymnastics as often as we watch basketball, football, baseball, et cetera. The casual “every 4-year” fans didn’t see you coming in 2012, but were more than proud to see you rise to gymnastic royalty. All eyes were on Jordyn Weiber and Aly Raisman (team captain). You, Weiber and Raisman all did well in qualifying for the all-around (qualifying 2nd, 3rd and 4th overall), but due to the rule that only 2 from each team could qualify for medals, Weiber (the reigning champ in this event) was the odd one out. She was seen with tears in her eyes, and justifiably so. All eyes were still on Raisman, but you rose as the victor and made history (see 2012 Olympic resume above…again). Next thing we knew, you and Phelps were the talk of the whole Olympics. Endorsement deals galore. A Lifetime biopic. Oprah. Everything seemed great for you, BUT…that’s where I saw the seed of your character. It was right there, during your coronation as the new Queen of the Gym with multiple gold medals, that is where I saw you rise. Not rise above the balance beam. Not rise above the scoring charts. But rise above the pettiness. Here you were, breaking records and taking names, and back home, you had basic…”folks” (for lack of a better word) and even commentators talk about your hair. *side eye* You earned your popularity and gold medals via hard work and dedication, but you didn’t ask for the celebrity status, and you certainly didn’t ask for their opinion on your hair. Yet, you remained poised and displayed grace. Thank you #1.
Now, for the main reason for this letter. (Yes, I know it’s long. Please bear with me.)

A year after you rose to the top, a young Simone Biles made her debut as a senior gymnast. The “every 4-year” fans didn’t see her coming, just like they didn’t see you coming in 2012. For some crazy reason, they just expected you to not only qualify for the 2016 Olympics with ease, but be the team captain, be superwoman and have a perm all at once. *another side eye*
I wish people could really comprehend how hard it is to train to do what you make seem easy. I wish more coverage were on gymnastics. You guys have events and competitions all the time, not just at the Olympics every 4 years. It is with that lack of knowledge and exposure that people were baffled that Simone Biles was “suddenly” crowned the greatest gymnast of all time coming into Rio 2016. So coming in to these Olympic games, you took a back seat to Simone…gracefully. Then, the Jordyn Weiber effect happened to you. You, the reigning champ in the all-around, placed 3rd, not only on the team, but also overall. Unfortunately, that pesky rule of only the top 2 from each team gets to go on, you were the odd one out. BUT…instead of tears, or a mean/jealous face, you took it in stride. Yes, I could tell that a lot was on your mind. Yes, I could tell a lot of inner emotions were forming, but you kept it in for the greater good of the team. Yes, you were the darling in 2012, but now Simone is the darling. You took that in stride as well. Thank you #2.
Behind the scenes and off-the-mat, you were dealing with other issues, such as your estranged father trying to come back into your life ONLY to try to get money from you. Also in 2010, two years before the world embraced you, you almost quit because your former gym staff strongly suggested that you should get a nose job. All of this off-the-mat drama mixed with time away from your family to train would lead you to nights where you would just call home to cry. You also had former teammates call you racist remarks such as “slave“. The hell you endured. The strength you showed…wow. Thank you #3. (You can read the rest of her off-the-mat drama here)

Let me make this last point, which is also my most personal point. As an African-American, it gave me great joy to see someone from my race rise to the top with poise and grace. Prior to you, it was Dominique Dawes. Dominique won her first gold when you were just 1 year old. That’s how long it’s been for our culture to see another black gymnast break records and barriers. When you came on the scene, you shattered Dominique’s accomplishments and everybody’s expectations. You weren’t just the Olympic darling and America’s darling, you were our darling. I can admit, sometimes within our culture, we have the crabs-in-the-barrel mentality. We don’t want someone to take our place or be better than us most times. You could’ve easily chose not endorse and support Simone. You could’ve given her side-eyes and hated from afar. It wouldn’t have been right, per se, but I would’ve understood. But, you didn’t do any of that, and if you did, you kept it to yourself and allowed your true character to eradicate the potential hate.
No, you didn’t get to complete and defend your all-around crown. No, you didn’t get to compete in as many events as you did in London. No, you didn’t get as much interview air-time as you did in 2012. People may have forgotten the road you paved for Simone. People still may have something to say about your hair. In fact, I just saw an article today where they were nitpicking about you not putting your hand to your heart during the National anthem, but I understand your true character. I want you to know that you are still our darling. I wish they gave medals for being humble and graceful. If so, you would definitely be a gold medalist in that as well.

Scores of unexploded bombs dating from World War II have been recovered from a children’s playground in northern England after a chance discovery.
Local officials in the town of Wooler, Northumberland called in bomb disposal experts after workers involved in a planned overhaul of Scotts Play Park found unexploded ordnance, the parish council said in a statement sent to CNN on Monday.
Two bombs were initially removed by the British Army, the UK Ministry of Defense said in a statement. The parish council was then advised that a full survey of the area was required, according to a council spokesperson.
Bomb disposal company Brimstone Site Investigation then uncovered 65 10-pound practice bombs and smoke cartridges on the first day of works, with a further 90 practice bombs recovered on the second day.
The company told CNN that the bombs date from World War II.
According to the parish council, all of the bombs need to be found and removed before the park can be reopened. It said 174 devices had been found so far.

Back at the turn of the 21st century, Qatar was a country with few cultural attractions to keep visitors and residents entertained. Yet the Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum — known as the FBQ Museum — was a place that most people visited as an alternative to the then-still rather ramshackle National Museum of Qatar.
You had to make an appointment, and drive out into the desert, getting lost a few times along the way, but then you were welcomed to the lush Al Samriya Farm with a cup of tea and some cake. The highlight was being allowed into a space crammed full with shelves and vitrines holding all sorts of eclectic artifacts from swords to coins — with the odd car and carriage standing in the grounds.
It wasn’t necessarily the kind of museum you’d find elsewhere in the world, but it was definitely a sight that needed seeing.
Today, it has grown and now claims to be one of the world’s largest private museums. It holds over 30,000 items, including a fleet of traditional dhow sailboats, and countless carpets. There’s also an entire house that once stood in Damascus, Syria.
There are archaeological finds dating to the Jurassic age, ancient copies of the Quran, a section that details the importance of pearling within Qatar’s history, and jewelry dating to the 17th century.
There are also items from 2022’s FIFA World Cup in Qatar including replica trophies, balls used in the games, entry passes, football jerseys and even shelves full of slightly creepy dolls and children’s plush animals.
Some of the more disturbing exhibits include various items of Third Reich paraphernalia in the wartime room, and, strangely enough, several showcases of birds’ legs with marking rings on them. Basically, whatever you can think of, you have a very good chance of finding it here.
Rumor even has it that behind a locked door is a room filled with the late Princess Diana’s dresses and other memorabilia, accessible only to a select few visitors. Another door hides a room, no longer open to the public, filled with collectibles of the late Saddam Hussein.

A more organic way to see this coast is by the multi-day coastal ferry, the long-running Sarfaq Ittuk, of the Arctic Umiaq Line. It’s less corporate than the modern cruise ships and travelers get to meet Inuit commuters. Greenland is pricey. Lettuce in a local community store might cost $10, but this coastal voyage won’t break the bank.
The hot ticket currently for exploring Greenland’s wilder side is to head to the east coast facing Europe. It’s raw and sees far fewer tourists, with a harshly dramatic coastline of fjords where icebergs drift south. There are no roads and the scattered population of just over 3,500 people inhabit a coastline roughly the distance from New York to Denver.
A growing number of small expedition vessels probe this remote coast for its frosted scenery and wildlife. Increasingly popular is the world’s largest fjord system of Scoresby Sound with its sharp-fanged mountains and hanging valleys choked by glaciers. Sailing north is the prosaically named North East Greenland National Park, fabulous for spotting wildlife on the tundra.
Travelers come to see polar bears which, during the northern hemisphere’s summer, move closer to land as the sea-ice melts. There are also musk oxen, great flocks of migrating geese, Arctic foxes and walrus.
Some of these animals are fair game for the local communities. Perhaps Greenland’s most interesting cultural visit is to a village that will take longer to learn how to pronounce than actually walk around — Ittoqqortoormiit. Five hundred miles north of its neighboring settlement, the 345 locals are frozen in for nine months of the year. Ships sail in to meet them during the brief summer melt between June and August.
Locked in by ice, they’ve retained traditional habits.
“My parents hunt nearly all their food,” said Mette Barselajsen, who owns Ittoqqortoormiit’s only guesthouse. “They prefer the old ways, burying it in the ground to ferment and preserve it. Just one muskox can bring 440 pounds of meat.”

Renee McGregor, a UK-based dietitian who specializes in eating disorders and athlete performance, encourages people to approach wellness trends with curiosity and skepticism. That’s because some influencers and celebrities could be promoting products because there’s a financial benefit for them.

In the 1931 movie “Frankenstein,” Dr. Henry Frankenstein howling his triumph was an electrifying moment in more ways than one. As massive bolts of lightning and energy crackled, Frankenstein’s monster stirred on a laboratory table, its corpse brought to life by the power of electricity.
Electrical energy may also have sparked the beginnings of life on Earth billions of years ago, though with a bit less scenery-chewing than that classic film scene.
Earth is around 4.5 billion years old, and the oldest direct fossil evidence of ancient life — stromatolites, or microscopic organisms preserved in layers known as microbial mats — is about 3.5 billion years old. However, some scientists suspect life originated even earlier, emerging from accumulated organic molecules in primitive bodies of water, a mixture sometimes referred to as primordial soup.
But where did that organic material come from in the first place? Researchers decades ago proposed that lightning caused chemical reactions in ancient Earth’s oceans and spontaneously produced the organic molecules.
Now, new research published March 14 in the journal Science Advances suggests that fizzes of barely visible “microlightning,” generated between charged droplets of water mist, could have been potent enough to cook up amino acids from inorganic material. Amino acids — organic molecules that combine to form proteins — are life’s most basic building blocks and would have been the first step toward the evolution of life.

And yet, while searching for an empathetic way back to portraying his character, Gries kept wondering if there was anything still redeeming about Greg.
An important “wake up moment” came during a decisive conversation he had with White just before filming in Thailand, in which the show’s creator said of Greg, in no uncertain terms: “He’s a psychopath.”
“And that was it. It was like, ‘back to the drawing board.’ And it really did help me,” Gries said.
The penultimate episode of the series will air on Sunday, an evening that thanks to “Lotus” and other shows has again become a night of appointment viewing amid a general move away from binge watching. Gries said he appreciates the shift.
“We’re a society that in a weird way doesn’t understand the beauty of waiting. The beauty of the space between the notes,” he shared. “If I binged (‘White Lotus’) I’d feel like I just ate too many chocolates. It just wouldn’t be the same. You need to process this.”

“It feels like it’s the right decision about now,” says Ben.
But as he gradually starts to realize his potential, Ruthe, when pushed, admits to having big goals in the sport.
“If I had to pick one thing, definitely Olympic gold,” he says. “I feel like that’s most runners’ dream and the biggest thing you can actually win. So that’ll definitely be the top of my bucket list.”
The 2032 Olympics in Brisbane, Ruthe adds, would be a nice target. And as for the Los Angeles Games in three years’ time? “I’d actually love to try and qualify for LA 28,” he says. “I feel like that’ll be a tough goal. But if I do that, I’ll be really happy.”
Already, Ruthe’s name is being mentioned in the same breath as Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen, the most successful middle-distance of this generation. It was his record as the youngest-ever four-minute miler that Ruthe took last week, and the New Zealander also beat Ingebrigtsen’s 1,500m record for a 15-year-old earlier this year.
Ingebrigtsen’s success, Ruthe says, has given him hope that he too can “have a good future” in the sport. But his biggest source of motivation comes not from the two-time Olympic champion, but from those closest to him – his training group led by coach Craig Kirkwood and athlete Sam Tanner.
The pair were instrumental in Ruthe’s recent mile time of 3:58.35, and it was five-time national champion Tanner who paced him perfectly around four laps of the track on his way to the record.

Lightning is a dramatic display of electrical power, but it is also sporadic and unpredictable. Even on a volatile Earth billions of years ago, lightning may have been too infrequent to produce amino acids in quantities sufficient for life — a fact that has cast doubt on such theories in the past, Zare said.
Water spray, however, would have been more common than lightning. A more likely scenario is that mist-generated microlightning constantly zapped amino acids into existence from pools and puddles, where the molecules could accumulate and form more complex molecules, eventually leading to the evolution of life.
“Microdischarges between obviously charged water microdroplets make all the organic molecules observed previously in the Miller-Urey experiment,” Zare said. “We propose that this is a new mechanism for the prebiotic synthesis of molecules that constitute the building blocks of life.”
However, even with the new findings about microlightning, questions remain about life’s origins, he added. While some scientists support the notion of electrically charged beginnings for life’s earliest building blocks, an alternative abiogenesis hypothesis proposes that Earth’s first amino acids were cooked up around hydrothermal vents on the seafloor, produced by a combination of seawater, hydrogen-rich fluids and extreme pressure.
Yet another hypothesis suggests that organic molecules didn’t originate on Earth at all. Rather, they formed in space and were carried here by comets or fragments of asteroids, a process known as panspermia.
“We still don’t know the answer to this question,” Zare said. “But I think we’re closer to understanding something more about what could have happened.”
Though the details of life’s origins on Earth may never be fully explained, “this study provides another avenue for the formation of molecules crucial to the origin of life,” Williams said. “Water is a ubiquitous aspect of our world, giving rise to the moniker ‘Blue Marble’ to describe the Earth from space. Perhaps the falling of water, the most crucial element that sustains us, also played a greater role in the origin of life on Earth than we previously recognized.”
